Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 7th June 2024

Welcome to Percy Hedley School's Family Liaison Blog!

Welcome back; final half term of this school year and a special welcome to our new starters. If I haven’t been in touch this week, I will be within the next week.

Blogs can become repetitive; some is useful as it serves as a reminder and any updates.  I spend a lot of time researching and hope you find it helpful. What I would like to do too is to do a “Let’s talk about…” each week and recently covered the 16-19 Student Bursary and Universal Credit for Post 16’s still in education. I would love to know what else you would like covered. I know they have been helpful, as I have had contact from some of you following publication. It will be under this image in future blogs.

Events:

Monday 10th June 14-15.00. Literacy session on “Bespoke Approaches to Reading” for some parents.

Thursday 13th June: Themed food day Italy!

Friday 14th June. Father’s Day sale. (It’s not too late to send in donations; please remember to send £3 with your child/young person on Friday if they would like to purchase a gift). This is a Student Council initiative, and they appreciate your support.

If you would like printed copies of any of the above, please ask the office team or me and we will send them home with your child/young person.

Online Safety:

The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading “Parent and carers area”, then “online safety” from the dropdown menu.

From Joel, who is doing the weekly online safety blogs:

This week is a friendly reminder that the internet is a fantastic place to learn, connect with friends, and have fun. However, just like in real life, it’s important to stay safe and smart when you’re online. Whether you’re young or old, there are some helpful tips to make sure your online presence is safe and sound. This does not just apply to online safety; these tips could help in other situations as we look at transitions and possibly making new friendships as you get older.

Information: North East Autism Society (NEAS)

I have been asked to share information on services for those living in Newcastle, North Tyneside, and Co. Durham. They offer support to those living in the specific areas above who are awaiting referrals to the neurodiagnostic team, are on the pathway to a diagnosis of Autism or were recently diagnosed. There are some webinars and some 1:1 appointments. All must be pre-booked.

Information: Max Card

The Max Card is a scheme offering a discount card for cared for, looked after children and/or children with special needs and disabilities up to the age of 25 years. Families can use their Max Card at venues across the UK to get free or discounted admission. They are provided by Local Authorities and some charities, though I note they are not available in ALL 12 North East Local Authorities.

Information: CEA Cards (Cinema Exhibitor Association)

This is a fantastic card for those who enjoy going to the cinema and provides a free carer ticket; the card holder pays normal entry. The minimum age is 5 years. You will also need proof of eligibility; DLA/PIP and a photograph of the child/young person. It costs £6 for a year.

Activities: Timbadash

Engagement pathway students had the opportunity to visit this week and it seems like a good time to share the information again. We have had them in school before and everyone enjoyed it. I also spoke with a parent who took her child to the show at Gosforth Civic Theatre and thought it was a fantastic experience.

Activities: Beach Wheelchairs

Summer is coming, so I thought I would revisit some things I have previously shared. We have new families, so it could be new to them!

Activities: Alan Shearer Centre

This is short notice but as you don’t need to book thought it worth sharing the “Father’s Day Card Making” activity tomorrow, Saturday 8th June. Poster is above.

Activities: Soft Play: After school! The SEN Support Space

SOFT PLAY We had such a good time at the castle we are going to try and do it more often! Here is the next one - remember siblings are welcome. Email thesenspace@gmail.com to book

FoPHS News:

I must admit that I get over excited at the arrival of new equipment. Most of the resources ordered for our sensory/music area has arrived. This was made possible following a generous donation of £1000 from Whitley Bay Flower Club.

FoPHS 100 Club

This is an easy way for people to support the work of FoPHS. For £12 per number, you will be entered into the remaining 6 draws, with 2 numbers for £12. You can pay by cash, cheque, BACS or QR code. If you choose the QR code, you can re-set the donation to justgiving to zero at the checkout. Please see form above and the poster with the QR code

Cresswell Towers 3–4-night stay.

Facebook Group

Each week I like to end with a quote, photos, something relevant, topical and I like it to be positive. This week, many of us have been touched by the sad news of the death of Rob Burrows aged 41, diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease just 5 years ago. I’ve followed his journey closely, loved the friendship and support he had from his former teammate Kevin Sinfield CBE, the rugby community, and his precious family. He, like another late rugby great, Doddie Wear OBE campaigned extensively for research and MND services. The documentary showed what life is like for carers too.

Here are some words from Rob’s final message:

“My final message to you is whatever your personal battle be brave and face it.
“Every single day is precious.
“Don’t waste a moment.
“In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.”
– Rob Burrows, CBE.
