Emily Giles raises £38,000 for Northern Counties School in memory of daughter Amber

Emily Giles, mam to Amber Giles, pledged to raise £36,000 to cover the cost of an Innowalk, and last week marked the opening of “Amber’s Innowalk Room” at Northern Counties School after Emily raised a a staggering £38,000 in total, thanks to a nearly £5000 donation from Newcastle High School For Girls last week.

Amber was a student at Northern Counties School, who sadly passed away in the summer of 2021. Emily dedicated the last 12 months fundraising in her name and her memory now lives on in the school, while helping to improve the lives of other students with the use of the new specialist equipment.

Northern Counties School is now the only school in the North of England to offer this amazing new piece of equipment.

Amber had been doing some trials on an Innowalk at school, and we knew that she absolutely loved that. We thought it would be a good idea to raise money for the Innowalk. It was something I felt would be a fond memory and a legacy within the school”

The Innowalk, by Made for Movement, is a powerful 3-in-1 device for sitting, standing and moving. It allows safe and comfortable movement for the user. Assisted, guided and repetitive movements in an upright, weight-bearing position stimulate gross-motor function and reduce the risk of negative health outcomes.

“For some of these children, it gives them the opportunity to move in ways they never have before, and everyone deserves to move.”

Rosalind Middleton, Physiotherapist, Great North Children’s Hospital

Emily has spent a lot of time and effort fundraising for the equipment to support other students, including hosting large events to celebrate the life of Amber, with raffles, family fun days, and sharing her story far and wide on social media.

Thanks to Emily, and the many people that have contributed towards fundraising, students at Northern Counties School have more access to beneficial, specialist equipment to support their movement and health. Emily plans to make a yearly memorial fund to keep Amber’s legacy alive.
