Football Galore!
Football has been a highlight of this year with a visit from Alan Shearer, and our students being mascots at an NUFC Game.
Alan Shearer Visit
The year began with a visit from Alan Shearer, who came in to give a presentation about his career, answer questions, sign some memorabilia and take some photos with our star-struck students and staff.

In partnership with SELA’s #Unsilencethecrowd project, our students were lucky enough to wear some special shirts which were equipped with new haptic technology, vibrating to mimic the crowd reaction to the game. It gave our deaf students a whole new perspective to the game.
They were also mascots at the game, walking out with some key players of Newcastle United.
You can see their reactions in the video to the right:
Tyne Tunnel Funds a New Sensory Tunnel at NCS
Tyne Tunnel recently came into Northern Counties School to see the new Sensory Tunnel, funded by and named after Tyne Tunnel. It's already a big hit with our students and we want to thank Tyne Tunnel so much for their contribution.
Students from Northern Counties School now have the chance to play in their own ‘Tyne Tunnel’ thanks to TT2.
Kindly funded by Tyne Tunnel, this bespoke Sensory Tunnel enables pupils aged 3-16 to explore their senses, improve their motor skills, and find a calming space. It’s already a big hit, offering a fun and safe environment for learning, playing, and transitioning between lessons.

Bamburgh class will be crossing the finish line at the Great North Run on September 8th.
Learners from Bamburgh class join #TeamPercyHedley as they hope to walk the Great North Run in September.
They’ve been fundraising around the local community as well as training by walking the distance from Tynemouth to Jesmond.
They met with our GNR sponsors Standby Healthcare as well to talk training tips.

See how Northern Counties celebrated World Book Day
World Book Day was a day to celebrate our literary themed spaces, including our Hillcrest Library which is now a safe space for all students looking for their next read (including those who want to look inside the wardrobe and take a peak at Narnia). The stairs going up towards the art classroom have now also been decorated with literary themed vinyl, with each stair depicting a different book spine.
Northern Counties School also celebrated by dressing up as their favourite characters and they hosted an arts and crafts afternoon. This was where students could re-create some famous book covers.

Learners took part in a range of hands on activities to learn about job roles within different sectors from the police and NHS to horticulture and hair and beauty.
We were lucky enough to have visits from Northumbria Police and Dr Colin Hill to give students and staff lots of information and answer all of their questions. Fun was had by all and everyone is already looking forward to next year.
Beach Trip and Surfing
Towards the end of the school year, Northern Counties had a whole school trip to South Shields beach!
Students had the opportunity to hit the waves and try out surfing! We can’t thank South Shields Surf School enough for these sessions, as many of our students wouldn’t have had this opportunity otherwise.
With a lunch of fish and chips, activities also included sand castle building and volley ball.
End of Year Awards and Prom!
To round off the end of the school term, there was the leavers assembly, prom and then the whole school awards!
Leavers Assembly and Prom
We said goodbye to five leavers this year at Northern Counties, and celebrated with a leavers assembly where we heard all about their years at school.
That afternoon we held a prom on the field in the sunshine!
School Awards
Then students received their end of year awards and we celebrated all of their achievements.
There were trophies and certificates galore!
Summer Picnic
That afternoon on the field the school held their annual summer picnic, with a visit from some superheroes and some pony’s.
Summer School
The first ever summer school at Northern Counties was a success for our 10 learners!
There were lots of enrichment activities throughout the week long summer school for our learners, one in which included a visit from some animals.
Students were overjoyed to see Salty and Jasmine the horses, the tortoise named Dave, chicken named Babs, bearded dragon Bob and many more.
Well, what a year it’s been!
We can’t wait to see what the rest of 2024 has in store for our learners, and look forward to welcoming them back for a new school term in September.
