Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 8th December 2023
Welcome to Percy Hedley School's Family Liaison Blog!
08.12.23
It’s looking even more like Christmas this week as the Christmas tree is up, decorated by students all singing Christmas carols. It was adjacent to my office; I may have joined in the carol singing. This will be a shorter blog, as I have already shared lots of seasonal activities.
There is a lot going on in school and the events calendar has been updated.
Events
Events for the next week for parents/carers
Tuesday 12th December 09-9.30: Engagement pathway assembly (Classes: HW, BE, AH, HF, KS + Che).
Friday 15th December 14-15.00: ELTBA pathway coffee afternoon (Classes RC, HR/SH, KH, HB, RM &TW)
Enterprise Fair: Wednesday 20th December. We have an Enterprise fair on the 20th and the FoPHS will have a table or two. We would appreciate donations of raffle prizes and the students are running their own stalls so donations of chocolate, gift sets etc would be appreciated. Thanks for your ongoing generosity and support. Just to say that parents/carers of all upper school and KS3 classes in Lower School (3HB, 3RM & 3TW) are invited to come along and support the students. Enterprise is an important part of the Preparation for the future aspect of the curriculum, where they learn about work, and it helps them develop confidence and their social communication. Please support them.
School Lunches
Lots of you have been asking about payment for school meals. This information will be shared with you today, with a letter going home with students.
Students in Key stage 1, up to Year 2 are automatically eligible for a free school meal. Others on low incomes should have made me aware by now. If you have not, please do so as soon as possible.
Online Safety
I can’t emphasise enough the importance of keeping up to date with anything online safety related. This week’s online blog really brings home the importance of parents knowing what their young people are doing online; a game may have a PEGi rating of 12 years, but many of our students are not at that level.
My own 25-year-old son, a former PHS student still favours Mario and Sonic and Paw Patrol, for which I am grateful. Maria is a mine of information and is always happy to discuss individual student needs. The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading “Parent and carers area”, then “online safety” from the dropdown menu. It is here. This week’s online safety blog is on the video game;” Exploring Five Nights at Freddy’s” (FNaF) and can be found below.
Special Needs Jungle
I follow this group and often refer to it. Preparation for Adulthood starts from birth according to the NDTi, and it is the aim of the government for all young people, not just those with SEN. However, it is certainly more challenging for those with SEN, their parents and, indeed those who support them, professionals included. I thought this was worth sharing
NEW POST: Why Preparing for Adulthood outcomes, from the earliest years, must be an integral part of the new national EHCP template. We hear from Julie Pointer of the National Development Team for Inclusion – NDTi
Theatre Royal: Relaxed Pantomime performance
The Theatre Royal have a relaxed performance of their new panto Pinocchio on Sunday 10th December 2023 and Wednesday 10th January 2024.
These performances allow for noise and movement in the auditorium, re-entry when needed and a special chill-out space for those who may need time away during a show.

Sensory Breakfast With Mrs Claus - FREE
For families with younger children or children not at school; unfortunately for those here we are still in school term. I still felt it worth sharing.

Come and have your breakfast on Wednesday 20th December 9.30-11am.
Your child will receive a gift which can be collected from Mrs Claus or given to you by her Elves.

FoPHS News
I have been, as they say full of busy this week organising the input from FoPHS to various Christmas events we are supporting.
Jolabokaflod, which Becky told us about in last week’s blog and will be a little different this year. Different is good.
We have had a donation from a company via one of our parents and each student will receive a selection box or sensory item. We used to get these pre COVID from various businesses and I am sure you will appreciate this very kind gesture.
Facebook page:
This is a closed group for family and friends of Percy Hedley School, where you can share news and updates about school life. It is not for external professionals who may be working with families. To join, you need to answer the question stating your link with school.
Please note: this group is for sharing news and updates about school life and is not intended to discuss any issues around individual students, and as such all comments are moderated. If you have a particular issue or concern, please contact school directly on 0191 216 1811.
FoPHS 100 Club
We have so many options now to make this easy. For £12, you will have 12 chances of winning a money prize. How much this is will depend on how many numbers are taken. The magic 100, which I aspire to reach would be £50.
You can complete a paper form, send in cash or cheque (latter payable to Percy Hedley Foundation), you can pay by BACS, or you can do it via a QR code, and we have a flyer now.
Having a frantic week behind me, here is this week’s thought!
