Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 15th September 2023

Welcome to Percy Hedley School's Family Liaison Blog!

We’re all well settled back to school now and I’ve been in contact with parents of all our new starters. I hope that your children continue to thrive and learn here.

What a busy start to the academic year it has been, with the Great North Run, Mini and Junior versions last weekend? I first got involved back in 2009 when my son was at school here; my husband did his first one for PHF. I dropped him in Newcastle, then drove to South Shields with our 4 children and waited at the tent in the charity village for him to return. The following year, we joined the team at the tent, and I’ve been there every year since with my now 25-year-old former PHS student son Niall. I love the atmosphere, meeting people doing the run, finding out what drew them to support us. Sunday was a day like no other for us; with very hot sunshine, turning to heavy rain and thunder. Transport was chaotic to say the least. Well done to everyone who competed, supported in whatever way. It doesn’t surprise me that the GNR is the world’s largest half marathon and for me, (a blow in) it is the people of the North-East who make it so. I would love to share your photos of the event, so please forward to me or share on our Facebook page.

We had an Ofsted Inspection this week. Thanks to those who completed the Ofsted Parent View questionnaire. The process now is that a report will be done and sent to school in the first instance. The full report will be published within approximately 38 days. The Head Teacher will have had verbal feedback at the end of the inspection and I’m sure John will cover this in his blog.

Pupil Premium and Free School Meals.

All families have been sent a letter at the end of last term regarding the above. It is copied below for those who have not seen it. I require all of these to be returned if your child is eligible for Free School Meals. If you returned one in previous years, I still require them returned each year. If your child has moved into Year 3,7,10 or 12 or you have submitted a new application I will require evidence of eligibility. We have received funding from North Tyneside Council as part of the additional funding from central government up to the summer holidays. This covers children up to Year 13. As Year 14 is an additional school year, they do not provide vouchers for the holidays.

Message from North Tyneside participation yesterday is below:

There is a commitment to offer vouchers in the school holiday periods for children who are eligible for Income Related Free School Meals until 31ST March 2024”.

I rather like Tracey Horner’s poems and books. Here is one I have permission to share. It’s my positive end to this week’s blog.
