How long have you worked at the Percy Hedley Foundation?

I started in September 2017, working at Tyne House as a Residential Care Officer.

What has your journey been within the Foundation to get to where you are today?

After finishing my role at Tyne House in 2021, I worked on a zero-hour contract for a year while completing a Digital Support Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3) with an app design company. Once I finished my apprenticeship, I applied to work in Media, where I could use both my healthcare and design skills — the perfect role for me.

After a year in this role I was promoted to Activity Lead of Media, a role I’m proud of.

What does an average day look like for you?

A typical day for me as the Activity Lead for Media is planning and running fun media activities for the group. This can include things like radio production, recording and presenting, audio editing, photography, videography, and design work using Canva. I always try to make it enjoyable so everyone can learn new skills in a positive and supportive environment.

I also help with personal care when needed and manage a small team of support staff to make sure everyone is happy and safe. I support a group of people to make sure their care plans are right for them, attend meetings with other professionals, and help new staff settle in.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in your time at the Foundation?

The biggest positive change I have seen is the start of the Hedley’s Beyond team, who focus on helping the people we support to find work experience placements. The team takes time to get to know each person and understands their skills, interests, and future goals. Because of this, they are able to find placements that suit each individual very well. This has made a big difference for the people we support.

What’s your favourite part about your role?

I really enjoy being creative with the people I support and helping their ideas turn into reality. It’s rewarding to watch their confidence grow as they develop their skills and talents. I also enjoy being involved in the live events our department runs with other groups. Seeing the people we support take part, express themselves, and succeed in these events is something I find very fulfilling.

What is your greatest memory of working at the Foundation?

My greatest memory at Percy Hedley was being involved in a big production of Hedley’s Got Talent. The media activity group I run designed promotional materials, created videos to showcase at the event, and supported the people we work with as they rehearsed and performed live. They absolutely smashed it, and the event was a huge success!

A piece of advice to someone joining the Foundation?

Starting at Percy Hedley is a rewarding experience, and you’ll work with some truly incredible people. Take time to get to know the people you support — building those relationships is the most rewarding part of the job. Share your passions and interests, as they can create meaningful connections and opportunities.
