News, Stars & Happy New Year from John & the PHS Team 12th January 2024
Welcome to Percy Hedley School's Whole School Blog!
Hi everyone,
Happy New Year and a great 2024 in store to you all. How are you all, are you well? Thanks for coming back to our blog here where we celebrate news and STARS!!! from this week in the school. There’s a range of articles, so hopefully there’s something you can find that suits you. There’s some really interesting stuff on Occupational Therapy this week, and some very good STARS!!! further down in the blog. Oh, and have a look at the Braille stuff, too, it’s great
Let’s hope that 2024 brings all the things that we all want with it. In terms of school, that your son or daughter that is here enjoys themselves here, feels happy and safe and makes the progress that they need to in the areas they should. We hope so and we’ll be working hard to try and make that the case. We are also hoping to restart our Early Years provision some time in 2024, which would be wonderful if we can
Spoiler Alert: look out next week too for new of our Sensory Motor Suite opening!!!!!!!!!!!
And we will also have a grand opening for our Outdoor Pod at some point too!
If you want ore after reading this, our school calendar is on the website, there is also Eitleen’s Family Liaison blog, Maria’s Online Safety one, the rest of the PHS website and all of the PHF one too. So lots to look at. Otherwise please do just have a lovely weekend and a great 2024
All the best

our three Super Steering Groups
These three Steering Groups deliver our curriculum – there’s a paper describing how it works on the website if you want to read further. The Groups work on all the areas in these broad themes to deliver the right things for our pupils. This is where a lot of exciting stuff is happening, so I can’t resist leading on it in the blogs. Here is the latest from those three Groups
Literacy!
First we have the Literacy Squad, and Sarah is here to tell us about what’s happening in the first part of this year in the world of Literacy
Happy New Year to you all!
Spring Term is here, and we have many literacy events ahead of us including National Story Week which takes place at the end of January and World Book Day in March. Also, watch out over the next few weeks as we will be sharing literacy news from our three pathway Engagement, ELTBA and Appropriate Accreditation classes.
What is National Storytelling Week?
In 2024, National Storytelling Week will take place from 27 January to 4 February. This fantastic annual event is a joyful celebration of the power of sharing stories. Stories teach us about the world, they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy, they help us to relax and escape and they can help develop essential literacy skills.

Key Stage 3 (Secondary Outcomes) – Strong Feelings
Key Stage 4 (Secondary Outcomes – Self Esteem and Unkind Comments

The statutory age-appropriate curriculum will be delivered at your child’s assessed developmental stage through use the PSHE Association SEND Framework outcomes. I will be attending coffee afternoons to share the curriculum and resources, please come along and have a chat! In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me; j.ferguson@percyhedley.org.uk
World Braille Day
World Braille Day is an international day on 4th January and celebrates awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and visually impaired people.
4JF/KG have been learning how to read and write in Braille this week! We’re going to get them printed using the Braille machine next so watch this space for an update…
Careers Fayre!
Careers is part of Personal Development. This is from Louise R, who doesn’t want us to forget that lovely event before Christmas.
PHS Career Blog
In this week’s blog I’d like to say what a lovely Christmas Fayre we had back in December. All the tables were stocked with productive products which showed the creativity skills of our students here at PHS. Products showed great attention to detail. Students on the stalls were able to show good teamwork with one another whilst showing good communication skills to the public. Opportunities allowed students to use their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to cope and explore difficulties around handling money.
Well done to all at PHS. You all showed amazing enterprise skills
Excellent stuff, Louise, and I completely agree. It was a really good occasion. Well done to all involved and a huge thank you to all parents and family members that were able to come
Physical Development
Amelia – Physical Progress STAR of the Week!
Amelia’s journey over the last 18 months is an excellent example of how she has progressed with her physical development whilst demonstrating resilience and determination! Amelia has worked hard with the therapists to build up her strength, and has done this brilliantly! Over the last year Amelia has increased the time she is able to remain standing for by a huge amount! Well done Amelia, fantastic work!! What’s that? You want to see some pictures? Of course you do!
PE Clubs
There are two fine chaps in PE these days, Richard and Nathan, and as part of Physical Development they are putting on lots of great lunchtime clubs in PE, some old and some new. Here they are! Great stuff
