Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 24th November 2023

Welcome to Percy Hedley School's Family Liaison Blog!

As we approach the end of November, school is gearing up for Christmas linked activities for students. The FoPHS is in discussions to see how we can support. More details will follow. It is a busy time of year, and we know some students find the sensory overload difficult.

Different departments have their own activities including Christingle making, Talent Show, MOVeing in a Winter Wonderland, Christmas dinner, craft sessions and special assemblies. There are other things which we are keeping secret until confirmed but it’s going to be a great month for school. Watch this space.

The next Social Coffee morning with me is Wednesday 29th November from 9.30-11. This is one of our ways of bridging the gap between home and school. It’s a way to meet with other parents, share experiences and tips. I host these, so am there to offer support, signposting as needed. You are welcome to drop in for part or all of it. Please do let me know if you plan to come along. I may even have cake.

If you are unable to come into school and would like an online “coffee and chat”, please let me know and I will arrange it.

Online Safety:

The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading “Parent and carers area”, then “online safety” from the dropdown menu.

The online safety blog this week is about Tik Tok, as requested by our parents survey.

Free School Meals:

If your child is eligible for free school meals and you haven’t yet made me aware or returned the form, please do so or contact me as soon as possible. Those on income related free school meals receive vouchers to support you during school holidays. This support comes from the Household Activity and Food fund, currently provided by central government, and will continue until March 2024. If you already receive vouchers, please remember to activate them on receipt. They are intended to provide food for your child in that holiday and vouchers not activated will be cancelled by North Tyneside Council.

Some of you have been asking about charges for school meals. This has been deferred until the new year and was shared with you in the school blog. As soon as the process is finalised you will be informed. If these charges will cause hardship, please let us know.

Please see link below for information on Pupil Premium and Free School Meals. The letter is also included.

16-19 Bursary.

This is something I have covered in previous blogs, in person and online with Post 16 parents/carers. The bursary is open to Post 16 students only, your young person would need to have been 16 years old and under 19 years on 31st August 2023. I will send applications for those who have requested them today or Monday.

The video recording of the session has taken time to upload but is now ready to share. If you would like it shared with you, please let me know.

If you believe your young person is eligible, please let me know so that I can send you the correct application form. There is a link here to government information/eligibility:

Work Capability Assessments (WCA).

Forewarning: This is long but worth reading if your young person is nearly 16 or is currently in Post 16. It links well to the last section, on the 16-19 bursary but is also important for students who are in Post 16. It is relevant to families who currently claim Child Tax Credits and to those who are not eligible due to family income

Enterprise

Who would like to support our wonderful enterprise students by ordering a Christmas Wreath? Enterprise is an important part of the curriculum, preparing our students for adult life and initiatives like this one make it real.

Information

This includes some helpful advice from the Toby Henderson trust on how to make Christmas Autism friendly.

Activities

FoPHS News:

We had a great turnout last week at our meeting, and hope this is a sign of things to come. Without parent/carer involvement it is simply not the same. Your ideas and support make this group the best it can be, and we really appreciate everything you do to make it so. We also appreciate the support we receive from the foundations fund-raising team.

I love the quote above.

Please remember that I am here to support parents/carers. Often people apologise unnecessarily for contacting me. It’s a part of my work that gives me personal satisfaction. My contact details are below:
