Northern Counties Teacher Selected for UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme

Abi Cowie has been selected as one of only 65 teachers across the country

The UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme allows teachers to discover first-hand about UK Parliament, and how to engage their students into politics.

Following a successful application, Abi Cowie, Assistant Headteacher at Northern Counties School, has been selected as one of only 65 teachers across the country to take part.

During this three-day programme, Abi will watch debates in the House of Commons and House of Lords and learn more about the role of MPs and Lords, doorkeepers and select committees.

She will also tour the palace, meet teacher colleagues, and have an opportunity to quiz Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, and his counterpart in the Lords, Lord McFall of Alcluith.

Sir Lindsay said the programme “offers a great opportunity for politicians and teachers to share experiences”.

“In my view, you are never too young to get involved in democracy and to make things happen – so giving teachers an insight into our world is a great way to pass that message back to the classroom,” he said.

“We also appreciate having the chance to talk to teachers about their experiences, to thank them for their hard work – and to see how we can work together to get children interested in politics.”

This excellent opportunity will help to provide further insight into how we engage our students into the world of democracy and politics.

Abi added:

“It’s a fantastic programme, encouraging us to think about how to build on teaching and learning about democracy. Seeing the impact of bringing some of our learners here last week on a residential trip was a real privilege.”
