Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 21st June 2024
Welcome to Percy Hedley School's Family Liaison Blog!
21.06.24
STEAM week was amazing. There was a real buzz around school, lots of activities going on and the majority got to Centre for Life. Going by what I saw as they returned this was very popular with students. The school blog will provide more information but staff, led by Joel did a superb job this week.
Other events planned are the “This is me” festival and the MOVE summer days.
In response to several enquiries from parents and supporters I would like to inform you that there will be no summer/autumn fayre this year.
As I write, there are just 4 weeks of this academic year left. School closes on Friday 19th July and reopens to students on Wednesday 4th September. Every term, people ask for these dates. Perhaps pop them on your calendar now if you haven’t already done so. A reminder that if you want to check dates, please go to the school website rather than google. We had to change a date this year due to a clash with a GCSE. We have a system for updating now but can’t control how quickly a search engine refreshes. Thanks for understanding.

Free School Meals
Those in receipt of income related free school meals will receive vouchers to cover the 6-week school holidays. Please remember that I have to have evidence before I can process. Contact me if you need support.
Bursary: 16-19 years
Letters were sent to students who will have reached their 16th birthday by 31st August 2024, or are already 16+. This is to help with planning for the year ahead.
There are 2 types of bursaries:
- Vulnerable Student Bursary
- Discretionary Student Bursary.
Further information can be found here, or by contacting me:
https://www.gov.uk/1619-bursary-fund
Could I please ask for your support in returning the slip in the letter to me no later than next Friday 28th June?
Events
I’d like to use this opportunity to give advance notice of the final Social Coffee morning to be held on Wednesday 10th July from 9.30-11.00.
. As always, this is an opportunity for parents/carers to get together, share experiences, tips and learn from each other. You are welcome to drop in for as long or short a time as suits you.
You’ll find more on events in school on the events calendar below.

Online Safety
The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading “Parent and carers area”, then “online safety” from the dropdown menu.
It is below.
This week Joel is working on a survey on E-Safety for parents/carers. There is not a weekly blog, so you can review some you may have missed.
You can find the link to the online blogs below also.

Information - Carers
I thought that this week I would try to share information on Carers and where to find support. Carers: That’s us; all our parents, kinship carers, foster and adoptive parents. Add on those special people in your lives who support you because they are members of your extended family.
Support is variable and depends on where you live. I’ve included links to all the Local Authorities who have students in this school. With some there are grants for carers, Max cards, support groups etc.
Anyhow, here goes. There is a wealth of information on the Carers UK website including what your rights are as a Carer. Here is the website link.
You will find information too on the Contact-for families of disabled children website; under the Information and advice link below.
Help where you live
Personal Assistant Training
Do you employ a Personal Assistant, PA to work with your child/young person or are you planning to do so? Free training is available from Disability North.
Personal Assistant (PA) Training at Disability North, on Tuesday 25th June.
I thought it would be good idea to let you know. You can register if you are quick…
The day will starts at 10am and end at 2.30pm. You will receive a certificate of attendance. You can find all of the information you need here and book your place.

Smile Through Sport summer scheme: SEND Summer Holiday Activities 2024
I have been asked to share with you their SEND Summer holiday activity programme.
It’s packed full of multi-sport sessions, cycling sessions, athletics sessions, archery sessions and a water sport session. The summer programme is for children & young people with SEND and any siblings to come along enjoy themselves and have fun! These sessions are not postcode restricted; therefore sessions are open to everyone.
Charlotte’s Tandems
I’ve been asked by Richard, our PE teacher to share with you.
We lend, throughout the UK, at no cost (i.e. for free), tandems and tag-alongs to (and only to) people with disabilities or additional needs, who are unable to ride a bike safely on their own, so that they can enjoy the wonders of cycling.
You’ll find more information below.
Kielder Wonderland
Kielder Winter Wonderland is a full day experience packed full of festive activities to keep you and your little ones entranced all day.
Your full day will include everything from helping Mrs Christmas get ready for Christmas to helping in the elves workshop to walking through the forest to find Father Christmas plus lots more! With the forest home to Father Christmas and his festive friends you never know who you could bump into!
This is popular and books up early, hence sharing now.
Below is the link, with all the options and information. It starts on 16th November; this is the date for the relaxed performances and runs until 23rd December.

FoPHS News
We held our meeting yesterday. As there will not be a Summer/Autumn Fayre this year, the committee is looking for ideas on raising funds. Ollie will be writing to you; we welcome the fact that we have parent governors on the committee. Ollie was recently appointed as a school governor, filling a parent governor vacancy. Whilst our funds are healthy we have had more outgoings than income this year and this is likely to affect what we can offer going forward.
We drew the number generator draw and the winning number was number 3, Amy Heseltine, a staff member. We raised £234 for our funds. Thanks to Chris Fewster who kindly provided this for us.
We drew the remaining 6 100 club draws and the winners are:
Number: Name
57 Jenny Drummond
45 Vicky Duchar
4 Helen Driver
21 Jo Thomas
26 Paul Kinghorn
20 Lynne Rogerson.
Cheques to the value of £30 will be ordered. Thanks for your support of FoPHS. The 100 club takings cover our memberships of Parentkind and National Trust (educational). We raised £360 this year for FoPHS, which is a reduction in previous years.
Father’s Day Sale.
On behalf of the student council thank you for your support. They raised £218.25. FoPHS looks after their funds, and they are in the process of deciding how they would like to use some of their funds.
This week, for STEAM week we funded the Magic Show.

Bellway Homes Survey
Bellway Homes, headquartered in Newcastle, is dedicated to supporting local communities and they have sent a group of their latest cohort of graduates to assist us in creating this questionnaire to collect your experiences and aspirations for The Percy Hedley Foundation, in order to gain a better understanding of how the Foundation is supporting you.
The results of this survey will play a crucial role in shaping our future business plan, allowing us to better cater to your needs. Your input is invaluable to us, and we appreciate your participation.
This week is Learning Disability week, so I end with a quote from the late Stephen Hawking, CBE
