John Preston

John is the Chief Executive of the Percy Hedley Foundation and was officially appointed in December 2024 after holding the role for an interim period. His career has been within health and social care for almost 20 years.

John is responsible for over 1000 staff members and oversees the vision, strategy and overall success of the Foundation.

How long have you worked at the Percy Hedley Foundation?

I joined the Foundation on 1st June 2023.

What has your journey been within the Foundation to get to where you are today?

When I joined, I was the Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”). I came ‘out of retirement’ to join the Foundation and believed that the CFO role would suit what I was looking for at the time and would give me the job satisfaction and challenge I needed

My career since 2006 has been in health and social care with the last 10 years as CEO/MD of a large domiciliary care company. Given this experience, when the previous Chief Executive left in June 2024, the Board of Trustees asked if I would cover the CEO role (in addition to my CFO role) in an interim capacity for up to 6 months. This allowed both the Board to review what they needed for the CEO role, and it also gave me the opportunity to understand what I wanted to do. On 1st December 2024, the Board appointed me as the permanent CEO of the Foundation.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in your time at the Foundation?

Despite only being in the Foundation for 20 months, there have been a large number of changes, some positive and others less so. There are two main changes which are Foundation-wide that will have major, positive impacts in the future.;

  1. The financial performance of the Foundation is much stronger today than it was when I joined in June 2023. This is a credit to everyone in terms of what we have achieved so far, but there is still a way to go. For those who don’t know, I am a qualified accountant. My mantra when it comes down to understanding the financial priorities of an organisation is;
  • Turnover is Vanity
  • Profit is Sanity, but
  • Cash is King

The challenge is to make sure that we continue to generate cash into the future so that we can invest more in our people, our assets and our services.

2. The Board of Trustees has recently approved a 3-year strategic plan. There are a few supporting plans to finalised and then we will communicate it across the Foundation. The plan is quite simple and focuses on doing what we currently do, modernising our services where required and increasing the financial performance of the Foundation so that we can invest in our future. We will review and update the plan every year so that we can remain focussed on achievable goals, meeting the demands of the commissioners and improving the lives of our beneficiaries.

What does an average day look like for you?

There is no such thing as an average day. I know it’s a bit cliche to say it, but every day is different given the wide range of responsibilities of the CEO role.  I wouldn’t want it any other way.

What’s your favourite part about your role?

There are two…

  1. The people. It is both the employees and the beneficiaries who make the Percy Hedley Foundation a special place to come to work. They bring such an amazing spirit and passion to the Foundation that it is contagious.
  2. The variety of the CEO role. I get huge satisfaction from being able to understand and influence the overall performance of the Foundation, across all the various teams. My role requires me to put all these individual pieces of the “jigsaw” together so that we can move the Foundation forward in line with the agreed strategic plan.

What is your greatest memory of working at the Foundation?

Every day new memories are made. For example, today there was a photoshoot with some amazing people in Hedleys College… and I even got a scone from one of the students

A piece of advice to someone joining the Foundation?

Enjoy yourself.
