Carol Singers Entertain Shoppers

On 10th December 2009, pupils and staff from Percy Hedley Primary School went to Eldon Square to sing carols and songs outside Boots, as has become customary over the last five years or so.

We were invited by the Newcastle branch of The Rotary Club who, over a period of four days, raised money for charity.

This year, The President, Michael Seghal MBE chose to donate all the money raised to the Percy Hedley Foundation and a cheque for £2,500 was recently presented to the school.

The pupils sang a variety of well known carols and songs, such as Away in a Manger and Jingle Bells and they also performed some of the songs from this year's Nativity "Baby Jesus" by Alison Hedger.

The songs were accompanied by Mrs Dormer playing her guitar and also by the festive sound of bells, castanets and maracas.

The children who weren't playing instruments signed the words of the songs (led by Tracy Beeston), to a large audience of parents, friends and Christmas shoppers.

There were lots of Rotary Club members, wearing their bright green jackets, collecting money in their tins, and the occasion was a very happy and enjoyable one!

Afterwards, most of the children stayed to have their lunch and to look in Fenwick's windows at the annual Christmas display, which this year told the story of The Nativity, and it was, as always, a spectacular sight.

Two members of the Rotary Club, (both past Presidents), Mr. Bill Dunlop OBE and Mr. John Chamberlain, came to our Assembly on January 18th 2010 to present certificates to all the pupils who took part in the event. This is something new, and a lovely way of rounding off the event and to say thank you to the Rotary Club for their fundraising efforts.

We look forward to being invited to sing again next December, and to play our part in helping to raise money for charity.

A big thank you to all who took part, both staff and pupils. Well done everyone!
