Executives from the North East let their hair down on 18th September 2009 and took to the stage at the Alternative Business Awards whilst raising money for Percy Hedley Foundation.
The bi-annual event, held at the Journal Tyne Theatre raised £17,000 from sponsors and participants who joined in the fun. Award winners were given a series of tongue in cheek awards such as "Shiny Bottom" (for the person that sits on the most committees) and the "Twitface" (for the most prolific social networker).
All award winners were presented with a trophy and also a framed picture. The picture "Happy Face" was designed by Michael Dunphy aged 7 years who is a pupil at Percy Hedley Primary School.
Guests were also treated to the Opportunity Knackered 'Talent' Show where some of the business community demonstrated their musical talents. Contenders included groups from bdaily, UNW, Eversheds, Ryder Architecture and the Leighton Group.
The evening was hosted by newsreader Kathy Secker with a hilarious cabaret from comic Brendan Healy and music from house band 55 Degrees.
Des Bustard, Director of Fundraising said "This was another great night for the business community and for Percy Hedley Foundation. We had a brilliant evening of entertainment and raised a fantastic amount of money towards our appeal to build a new hydrotherapy centre which will bring invaluable benefits to disabled children and adults in the region".
Tony Best, CEO of Percy Hedley Foundation said: "The support of business in the North-East is really heartening. Despite a recession, they are continuing to support the disabled children and adults who we work with. This event is testimony to the compassion and thoughtfulness of the individuals who sponsored and helped us organise the evening, and who came along, not only to enjoy themselves, but to contribute to our appeal".
The main sponsor was Northumbrian Water, along with other award sponsors: Ark Associates, Bradley O'Mahoney Public Relations, Eversheds, Ward Hadaway, Leighton Group, Gateshead Newcastle Arts Forum, NRG, NECC, bdaily, Gateshead College, Ryder Architecture, Gentoo, Newcastle Gateshead Initiative and ncjMedia.
