4HW - First at the 2012 Olympics
4HW Meet Jonathan Edwards at the Olympic Site.
On Wednesday 25th March 2009, the class of 4HW from Percy Hedley Secondary School, had an amazing opportunity to visit the construction site of the 2012 Olympic Games. This was a great honour as they were the first school to visit the Olympic Park Site.
The staff and students travelled to Stratford Station where they were met by an Olympic delegation, which included Jonathon Edwards, triple jump gold medallist. They were then given a guided tour of the Olympic site, which included a video presentation about the planning and construction of the Olympic stadium and other facilities. Tara, the guide, showed them where everything will be built in 2012 as they toured the site. Pupils had to use their imaginations as most of the park was still a building site, however, construction of the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre and the Olympic Village had started and the structure could be seen to be taking shape. The site is 5,000 acres and there will eventually be 9,000 people working on site to finish the development in time for the 2012 games.
Pupils were amazed at the size of the site, "Even though the place was just a huge building site it had the sense of hope in the atmosphere." (Matthew Turner) and were inspired at the thought of the games taking place, "It was really good and I would love to run in the stadium in front of 80,000 people" (Andrew Leck).
4HW's visit to the site on the 2012 Olympic games was only part of their class trip to London, but they all agreed it will be something they will never forget. "What a fantastic experience, I was lucky to see it". (Matthew Scully)
