On Thursday 12th March 2009, crew members and the new Commanding Officer of HMS Dauntless, Captain Richard Powell, visited Percy Hedley School to meet the children and tell them the latest about the Royal Navy's newest ship.

There has always been an affiliation between the Royal Navy and Percy Hedley School and following the decommissioning of HMS Newcastle we were delighted to be the charity adopted by HMS Dauntless as part of their affiliation with the city of Newcastle.

The ship was built in Glasgow and is currently undergoing sea trials prior to sailing to her base in Portsmouth in the summer. The Ship's Company have already undertaken several charity challenges including a team running for Percy Hedley Foundation in the 2008 Great North Run, raising £4,800. Crew members even ran from Glasgow to Newcastle, some 155 miles, dressed as roman centurions.

During the visit, the crew spent time in class answering the children's always interesting questions and were challenged to a game of powerchair football at the Sports Academy, they lost 3 - 0 !!! A team of 20 are again running for us in this year's Great North Run. Good Luck from everyone here and until we meet again... Bon Voyage!
