Royal Support For Disabled Learners

A senior executive from the Percy Hedley Foundation recently chaired a high level policy meeting attended by HRH, The Princess Royal.

David Barker, Director of Adult Services at the Foundation was asked to chair the event, which had the aim of promoting the social and economic inclusion through learning and skills provision of people who experience mental health difficulties and disability.

Funding for disabled learners is currently provided through the Learning and Skills Council, which is being disbanded in April 2010. The meeting, which took place in London on 26th February, was looking at ways to ensure that this very important group of learners are not forgotten about in the transition to new funding structures.

There was representation from all the relevant government departments, learning providers, voluntary sector agencies and disabled learners.

David Barker said, "Her Royal Highness was able to use her influence to get the key people together. It was agreed to establish a Transition Management Group to make sure that we continue to deliver on this agenda".
