Northern Counties pupils, staff and parents have been involved in designing and promoting
the ITV "Signed Stories"
website, an interactive collection of well known stories which are accessible to all
family members as they are presented in text, illustrations, British Sign Language (BSL) as
well as being read aloud.

2008 - an event which is growing each year and is great fun for all the staff, children and

Abi's class spent three days exploring Northumberland and Edinburgh Zoo.

This half term, Abi's class are working with the Northern Counties artist-in-residence, Kelly,
who is working with the pupils, teaching them how to make their own puppet of themselves.
Their puppets have been used for social communication lessons.

Abi's class spent the week beginning June 16th in the Northern Counties residential unit.
The group planned various outings based on their Asdan Units, which are Horticulture and
Using Public Transport.

As part of our Geography work on maps, directions and compass points, Sam Butlin's
class (Stewart, Oliver, Mark, Anthony and Jordan) have taken up a new hobby. It is called
Geocaching and it is great fun because it is just like a treasure hunt!

Since Northern Counties 'School for Families' opened its doors on Thursday 2
February 2006, the reaction from children and their families across the region has
been fantastic. We are really pleased with the initial response to this free service
which offers the chance for pre-school children and a family member to learn new skills
by working together in a relaxed and informal setting.

Our new specialist teaching base for pupils on the autistic spectrum opened in January.
The room was designed to incorporate work bays for individual teaching, a group teaching
area, work space for movement and interaction and an additional area for quiet time and
relaxation.

We were thrilled that so many parents and friends were able to join us for our
Christmas performances this year. The assemblies were held on Wednesday 21 December, Primary
children in the morning and older students in the afternoon. We were very proud of our
students and the wonderful performances they gave. There was even a performance
by some of the parents who have been attending our signing classes. Well done!

in particular the visit from Santa.

Our Christmas Fair was a great success. Everyone had a wonderful time and there was
a lovely atmosphere on the day. Thank you to everyone who came along to support us. With
your help, we raised £2,431.26.

Some of our older students performed signed Christmas Carols at the Metro Centre
on Thursday 8 December and Eldon Square on Wednesday 14 December 2005. Thank you to
everyone who came along to watch and support us. We raised £1,070.29 at the Metro
Centre and £844 at Eldon Square.

A personal friend of Matthew Lone's family, Iain Norton, mentioned to Matthew's
dad a few months ago that he was planning to do a Coast to Coast bike ride (a mid
life crisis brought on by hitting forty!). He wondered if Matthew's school would be
willing to except some sponsorship money. Northern Counties were delighted to accept
and Iain began the job of getting sponsorship from business associates and friends.

Some of the students in Post 16 and Sarah Gedney's class took part in an art
competition this term called 'Eyes Open' to coincide with World AIDS Day. The
resulting art work was displayed at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.

On Thursday 20 October they visited the Mars Exhibition at the Centre for Life.

Here at Northern Counties we are very proud of our new family room. The room provides a
relaxing environment for families to spend time in when in school for meetings and appointments.
It has information leaflets, toys for siblings to play with and tea and coffee making facilities.
