Coronation Street Star opens Café @ the College

Coronation Street star, Vicky Binns, officially opened the new café development at Northern Counties College in Jesmond.

On Thursday 11th December at 11am Vicky, who plays Molly Compton in Coronation Street, helped students, staff and supporters of the College celebrate the opening of the 'Café @ the College'.

Vicky said: "I love visiting Newcastle and especially Northern Counties College - I had such a warm welcome from the students! I spent much of my time talking to the young adults and hearing about college and life in general. I've been so impressed by the positive attitudes and commitment I've witnessed during my visit and it's been my absolute pleasure to be involved. I wish the students and the College every success for the future and thank them sincerely for a fantastic experience."

As part of the Percy Hedley Foundation, Northern Counties College caters for a range of learners with severe and complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities. Based in Jesmond Newcastle, students have excellent access to the community including the metro system, shops and entertainment.

Angela Gray, Principal, commented: "We are delighted that Vicky could help us celebrate the opening of our café. Over 50 guests joined us from local organisations, colleges and schools and we're grateful for their continued support. The café provides a real work experience for students as well as an opportunity to socialise with their friends, develop their money skills and make independent choices."

The 'Café @ the College' is just one example of the real work opportunities available to students attending Northern Counties College. Other employability opportunities include a Training and Conference centre (managed and catered for by students), a Business Administration Service and a Horticulture Centre.
