School for Parents

At Percy Hedley, we believe that early intervention can have a positive impact on the development of children with motor disorders.

The Percy Hedley School for Parents (for children aged 1-4 years) and Family Support Centre was opened on 11th June 2003, and offers an important service for families with children who have cerebral palsy.

The School for Parents is a free service provided at the Percy Hedley Primary school in Forest Hall, Newcastle. This scheme has been developed by the International Peto Institute in Budapest and is supported through the SCOPE School for Parents Network.

At the School for Parents, children with cerebral palsy or similar disabilities are accompanied by their parents and participate in programmes of holistic learning involving the children inactive sitting, standing, walking, changing place and position, manipulation, communication, cognitive development and self-help skills. The children are motivated to learn with songs, rhymes, toys and play.

Parents are central to the child's learning and through the School for Parents, they will receive guidance and support to develop their child both within the group situation and at home. The team will facilitate this process for both children and parents, and will include information sharing days to address areas of need, opportunities to meet other parents and share ideas, and to further knowledge of cerebral palsy and its related difficulties.
