Wheelchair Rugby League comes to Percy Hedley

This fast paced and exciting game is still being developed across the country and is growing quickly. The Academy has been very fortunate to get the athletes involved and give it a go.

The Wheelchair Basketball session on Wednesday night was taken over by three coaches involved in Rugby League to give the athletes a chance to have a go at the developing sport. One of the coaches who came to the Academy is Phil Roberts who is player/coach of the Wheelchair Rugby League England Team who are currently number one in the world after winning the World Cup last year. The Academy is already involved in Powerchair Rugby and everyone was very keen on introducing a new sport to the athletes.

Wheelchair Rugby League is a fast moving game and involves players having tags attached to their knees and shoulders. Removing a tag from an opponent is a tackle and the ball is then tapped off the floor then passed. The RFL have been working hard to try and get children and adults involved in the sport having demonstrations and sessions where people can go and try out the new sport.

Sports Academy Manager Adam Parry - "Wheelchair Rugby league is another sport that we hope to assist the RFL in bringing to the North East to give another option of sport to wheelchair users all over the North East. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the session with Phil Robert's and many of them have expressed a wish to engage in the sport on a regular basis. With all of this support and momentum we hope to enter a team into the league this year".
