Cricket at Lord's

Captain, Edward Common sorts out the team during a training session.

A team from Percy Hedley Sports Academy were at Lord's cricket ground on 12th May, where they were competing in the Lords Taverners National Table Cricket Finals.

After easing through the Regional Tournament and winning all their games the six players made the long journey down the A1 to compete against all of the other regional winners from around the country. In the pool games they faced Clare school and Brookfield school.

Although the opener against Clare was a close run affair, the team eased past Brookfield school to earn their place in the Semi Finals against close friends Portland College.

Batting first the team was struggling until the team captain Edward Common racked up an impressive 23 runs in the final over.

However nerves, youthfulness and inexperience gripped the team when they were fielding and a few poor fielding misses allowed Portland College to win the game by 13 runs.

The score from the batting in this Semi Final was enough, however, to secure 3rd place overall in the competition.

Adam Parry, Sports Development Manager at the Percy Hedley Sports Academy said 'This is the second new sport that we have competed in during this competition year and again a 3rd place National placing is another spectacular result. All credit goes to the players, the coaches and all of the parents and carers involved in this sport and indeed in all of the sports at the Sports Academy'.

Another highlight of the day was that Edward Common was selected as one of the players in the England Select Table Cricket team for the next year.
