WFA National Powerchair Football Season draws to a close.
The weekend of the 17th and 18th March saw the Wheelchair Football Association (WFA) National Powerchair Football league draw to a close.
Both Percy Hedley Panthers and Northern Thunder had everything to fight for as both teams had qualified for the Play Off's following impressive performances in the group stages.
Percy Hedley Panthers faced local rivals South Tyneside Destroyer's in their Quarter Final and despite a good performance were knocked out at this stage.
Northern Thunder fared better and cruised into the Semi Finals after destroying Villa Rockets 10 - 0. South Tyneside Destroyer's were next in the Semi Final after they had beaten the Panthers. A very strong performance from Thunder saw them to a 2 - 0 win with a showdown against Aspire Hotspur in the Final.
After 40 minutes of play both teams were level at 0 - 0 and the game went to over time. The dreams and aspirations of the team were sunk however when with only 2 minutes remaining before a Penalty shoot out Aspire managed to break the dead lock. Despite coming back strong Thunder were unable to score and the game ended 1 - 0.
'We are obviously gutted to have come this far and to walk away without the Trophy but that's football I guess! The players themselves are gutted but they have played tremendously throughout this league. Bearing in mind that 4 of the 5 here at this weekend were not playing Powerchair Football 6 months ago their achievement is a testament to their grit, determination and skill !' - Adam Parry, Northern Thunder Manager.
